Epilogue

It was the night before Alex's first day of school. She had been
pacing back and forth in the living room going over her syllabus to
make sure she didn't miss anything. It didn't help that her glasses
smelled like Lysol Disinfectant either. Earlier in the afternoon, she
fell asleep on the couch while she was trying to get Alex to take his
nap. Instead of the little boy falling asleep, it was the bigger Alex
who dozed off. When she was asleep, little Alex slowly made his way
down the couch and found the blonde's glasses sitting on the coffee
table. After he started walking, his two mothers had to keep a closer
eye on him because he got into everything. Last week, he got into the
blonde's attaché and scattered some of her lecture notes all over the
apartment. That resulted in Alex putting all her lecture notes on her
laptop from now on and using Power Point when she lectured. Recently,
he discovered putting things in the toilet. The first victim was his
Mama's badge. Now, it was his other mother's glasses. When Alex
found them floating in the toilet bowl, she duct taped the lid to the
seat so the little boy couldn't put anything in there anymore.

Alex was glad Olivia made it home early tonight. It gave her time to
prepare for her first class the next day. She would be teaching a
class on Gender and the Law during the fall term, which meant she
could still take care of Alex. During the past six months, Alex Cabot
had learned what it was like to be working mother. Since her mother
died, she was now in charge of the Cabot Foundation. She would read
proposals and meet with people from various organizations seeking
grants, and she would be the one to decide where the money from her
family's foundation would go to. Most of the time she had Alex with
her, but when she had meetings, that's when she would ask Maureen
Stabler to watch him.

Feeling like everything was set for tomorrow, she joined her
girlfriend and the baby on the couch to watch the Jeff Corwin
Experience. Alex Benson loved Animal Planet. When one of his mothers
sat him down to watch, all his focus would go to whatever show was on.
There could be a snow storm going on around him and he wouldn't have
noticed. His favorites included Planet's Funniest Animals and That's
My Baby, which chronicled baby animals of all sorts. Sometimes he
would mimic the sounds the animals made and one time there was a
special on orangutan babies and he tried to copy what the orangutans
were doing. It was a very cute thing to watch.

Lying in bed that night, Alex told Olivia her fears about the next
day. Would she be a good teacher? Would the students like her?

"Liv, what if they hate me? What if I freeze up in front of the
class? What if I goofed on the syllabus?"

The brunette held her lover closer and did her best to reassure her.
"Baby, you're going to be fine. Just go up and be your kick ass self.
You've been planning for a few months now. I think you're ready.
And if they give you a hard time, then I'll arrest them."

"For what?"

"For not realizing what a great person you are and what a great
instructor you will be. Just relax ok. Every thing will work out.
And besides, tomorrow's the first day and you'll just be going over
the syllabus with them right. That shouldn't be so bad."

"I know, I'm just nervous that's all. I've faced tough judges and
juries, serial rapists, and child molesters – I can face a lecture
hall full of aspiring attorneys."

"That's right. Now go to sleep. Good night. I love you," the
brunette said kissing her lover.

"I love you too."

When Alex walked into the lecture hall the next morning, she saw
roughly 50 young faces half hidden behind rows upon rows of open
laptops. She was thankful she chose to put everything on her own
laptop so her students wouldn't think she was too archaic or
technologically challenged. Setting her things down on the desk in
front and taking her position behind the podium, she addressed her
class, "Good morning everyone and welcome to Gender and the Law. My
name's Alexandra Cabot and I'll be your instructor this term. The
syllabus is being passed around I hope. And if you don't get it,
don't worry, I'll post it up on the class website later today." The
students were scanning the sheets Alex handed out to see how much work
they'd be doing and a few groans could be heard throughout the room.
"Alright, let's go over the syllabus." She knew there was a lot of
reading to do, but she felt all of it was necessary. She reassured
the class that the course wouldn't be so hard if they kept up and they
could always go to her office hours for help or email her if they had
questions. Looking up to see if anyone was scared away, she noticed a
young man in middle with his hand raised.

"Yes, do you have a question?"

"Um, Ms. Cabot, this might be a little off topic, but what are the
chances of me and you having lunch together today and getting to know
each other a lot better?" the man asked.

Alex gave him a glare that she usually reserved for rapists before she
asked evenly, "Young man, what's your name?"
The man smirked as a couple of his buddies were trying to hide behind
their laptops from the death glare their instructor was giving. They
could tell she was going to be all business and didn't want to get on
her bad side. In a cocky voice, he answered, "My name's Nicholas
Langan. I'm sure you know who my uncle is, right Ms. Cabot?"

`Great, the bad apple doesn't fall far from the tree I see,' the
blonde thought as she stared down at the pompous young man in her
class. "Mr. Langan, I don't appreciate your disrespectful comment and
attitude in my class. If you wish to behave in this childish manner,
I will have no choice but to remove you. If you have nothing
constructive or relevant to say, I suggest you keep your mouth shut."
To make a point that she would not tolerate immature behavior from
her students, the blonde added, "See class, people like Mr. Langan are
the reason we have sensitivity training in law firms. And Mr. Langan,
before you open your mouth again, I suggest you take one." And with
that, the young man sulked and stayed quiet for the remainder of the
class.

After a pretty eventful day on campus and meetings at the Cabot
Foundation, Alex was eager to get home to Olivia and the baby. When
she walked in the door early that evening, she was greeted with a
naked Alex Benson running towards her fresh from his bath and an
exasperated detective hot on his heels.

"Hi Mommy!" the little boy said as his other mother picked him up.

"Hey sweetie. Mmm, I missed you today," the blonde said as she held
him close and kissed him. "Did Mama give you your bath?"

"Hi sweetheart, how was the first day," Olivia said and kissed her
girlfriend. Turning to her son, she said in a stern voice, "Alex, no
more streaking! Or else I'll have to arrest you for public indecency.
Now come on, let's go put your clothes on while Mommy changes."

The little boy just laughed and held out his arms for his Mama to take
him. "Mama change."

When Alex and Olivia were seated at the table with little Alex in his
play pen tuning into Planet's Funniest Animals, they were talking
about each other's day. "So, how was your first day?" the detective
inquired.

"You'll never believe who's in my class."

"Who, some rich politician's kid?"

The blonde groaned over a plate of pasta, "Even worst – Trevor
Langan's jackass nephew, Nicholas Langan."

"Are you serious?" the brunette asked incredulously. "Is he as sleazy
as his uncle, or is he the black sheep of the family and actually has
a tolerable personality?"

"The little turd had the audacity to hit on me in front of the class.
I was fuming. I was so close to shoving my Manolo heels up his ass,
but I didn't want to ruin my shoes."

"What are you going to do about him? I could come by and slap him
around a little if you want me to," Olivia offered.

Alex sighed, "No it's ok. I appreciate the offer though. Don't
worry, I put him in his place after he said that. I'm going to act
mature about this and give him the benefit of the doubt. And if he
continues to be a jerk, I have the power to fail him." The blonde had
to grin at that thought. "The court house doesn't need another Langan
lurking around. There wouldn't be enough disinfectant to sanitize the
entire building."

"And speaking of disinfectant, I put up a little fence in the bathroom
door so Alex can't get in without one of us. That way, he can't put
anything in the toilet anymore. I still can't pick up my badge
without thinking where it's been."

The blonde just laughed thinking about their son's antics. "Well Liv,
he does get that mischievous side from you."

"Yeah, and he has your stubborn streak, Counselor," the brunette retorted.

"Whatever. Come on Liv, let's clean up and get ready for bed. I'm
tired."

-----------------------
Next week was Alex and Olivia's six month anniversary. Alex had
something special in mind, but had to get it cleared with the
apartment manager first. He gave his OK readily since Olivia had been
one of his best tenants. All she had to do now was get Olivia out of
the apartment long enough for her to get the surprise ready.

The morning of their anniversary, Alex Cabot woke up to the smell of
coffee and pancakes. Before she opened her eyes, she felt a light
weight sitting on her chest. When she opened them to see what it was,
she was greeted with another set of blue eyes staring down at her.
The little boy just giggled at her before saying, "Mommy up!"

"Now there's a wake up call I can enjoy," the blonde said as she
pulled the baby under the comforter and started tickling him. Olivia
could hear her son's laughter from the kitchen and made her way into
the bedroom to investigate. She found her girlfriend and her son in
bed playing and having the time of their lives.

"Hey sweetheart, it's nice to see you awake," the detective said as
she made her way to the bed to join her two loves. She turned to her
son and asked him, "Do you want to give Mommy her present now?"

"Yes!" the boy exclaimed as his Mama pulled a gift box out from under
the bed. She handed the gift to her girlfriend and kissed her good
morning. "Happy sixth month anniversary. I love you."

"Oh Liv, you didn't have to get me anything," the blonde said as she
kissed her girlfriend back. `Morning breath be damned,' she thought
as the detective deepened the kiss. When Olivia kissed her like that,
she could feel it all the way to her toes. Pulling away, Alex could
see all the love Olivia had for her in her eyes. `God, what that
woman does to me. So this is what being in love feels like,' the
blonde thought as she smiled at her lover.

"Well after last night," the detective said wiggling her eyebrows,
"I'd give you anything you asked for. You're insatiable, you know
that. I love it! And besides, it's not just from me, it's from Alex
too."

Alex kissed the little boy who was now wedged between his two mothers.
"Aww, thank you baby. You wanna help me open it? Hear I'll start
and you can tear off the rest of the wrapping paper." When she got to
the gift box and lifted the lid, she removed the tissue paper to find
one of the cutest photos she had ever seen. It was a picture of her
and Alex sleeping in their bed with little Alex sleeping on her chest.
She couldn't remember when it had been taken. Olivia said she took
the picture one night after she got home late and found the two of
them already sound asleep. The photo was in a wooden frame with the
message, "I love you Mommy" burned into the wood. Alex's eyes began
to get watery as she pulled her son and her girlfriend into a tight
hug. "Thank you. I love you guys so much. This is definitely going
in my office."

The rest of Saturday was spent lounging since both women had had a
busy week. When it was time for Alex to get her surprise ready, she
sent Olivia and little Alex out to do some errands. She made sure
mother and son had a lot to do so she could have enough time to set
up. She called Maureen earlier and made sure she was free tonight to
watch the baby while her and Olivia went out. When the detective
asked about it, Alex only told her they were going out for a romantic
evening just the two of them. The detective also inquired about what
to wear to this mystery location, and all Alex would say was to dress
comfortably – t-shirt and jeans would be just fine for what the
attorney had in mind.

When both women were ready to go, Alex and Maureen were sprawled out
on the living room floor playing with Alex's toy cars. From Tonka
trucks to racing cars, Alex had them all. They were all he would play
with besides his mothers' things. Once the two women were in the
elevator, Olivia was taken back when Alex suddenly blindfolded her.
The brunette protested, but the blonde insisted it was all part of her
surprise. Stepping out of the elevator, Alex led a confused Olivia up
another flight of stairs and opened the door to the roof of the
apartment building. The detective could faintly hear the traffic
below and could feel a light wind blowing around her.

"Can I take the blindfold off now?" Olivia whined.

Before her impatient girlfriend could remove the offending cloth over
her eyes, Alex pulled it off. It took a minute for Olivia to take in
her surroundings and to focus her eyes. But when she looked, she
found a small table with two chairs, candles, and rose petals
scattered everywhere. As she looked around, she noticed the roof was
lit with white Christmas lights all around them, creating a romantic
atmosphere. There was a picnic basket by the table and Olivia assumed
their dinner was in there. All she could do was stand there in
amazement at what her girlfriend had done for their anniversary. She
was quite impressed.

Alex moved behind her girlfriend and wrapped her arms around her. "Do
you like?"

Olivia put her hands over Alex's and held on tight. "Not only do I
like, I love." She turned into her girlfriend's arms and kissed her
long and hard with appreciation. With their foreheads touching, the
brunette whispered, "I love you so much. Thank you."

"I love you too, baby." The two held onto each other for a little
longer to enjoy the moment before Alex suggested they start eating
their dinner. She had gotten Olivia's favorites, both making them
herself and buying a few things, to pamper her detective that evening.
After getting everything out from the picnic basket, Alex set the
food onto the table. Seeing everything the blonde had done for their
meal, Olivia couldn't help but love her even more than she already
did. She couldn't believe Alex went through all that trouble just for
her. `Damn Benson, you're one lucky woman,' the brunette thought.

After glasses of apple cider and couple of chocolate éclairs for
desert, Alex had one more little surprise for her detective. Since
she couldn't bring their stereo up on the roof, she had to improvise.
"Hey Liv, you wanna dance with me?"

"Alex, I don't know if you've noticed, but there's no music. And I
don't count the people on the street yelling and the traffic noise music."

"I know that. Just stand up ok. I have a plan." Olivia got up
skeptically and went over to her girlfriend not knowing how the blonde
was going to pull this off. Alex grinned as she brought out her iPod.
"I know this may be a little silly, but I think it it'll work. You
take one ear bud and I'll take the other. And as long as we hold each
other really close, it should be fine." She tucked her iPod in her
back packet after she got the song she wanted. Her and Olivia were
holding each other when Edwin McCain's "These Are the Moments" began
playing through their ear phones.

Lying here with you
Listening to the rain
Smiling just to see
The smile upon your face

And these are the moments
I thank God that I'm alive
And these are the moments
I'll remember all my life
I've found all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more

Looking in your eyes
Seeing all I need
Everything you are
Is everything to me

"Now that's clever, Counselor," Olivia commented as her and Alex
swayed to the song. "Have I told you how much I love you already?
Cuz I really do. Thank you so much, sweetheart."

"I love you too, Liv. I've waited so long for this – for us. Thank
you for making my dreams come true."

And these are the moments
I know heaven must exist
And these are the moments
I know all I need is this
I have all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more

I could not ask for more than this time together
I could not ask for more than this time with you
Every prayer has been answered
Every dream I've had has come true
Right here in this moment
Is right where I'm meant to be
Oh here with you, here with me

And these are the moments
I thank God that I'm alive
And these are the moments
I'll remember all my life
I've found all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more

"Hmmmm…I guess we officially have a song now. Good choice, Cabot,"
the brunette said.

I could not ask for more than this time together
I could not ask for more than this time with you
Every prayer has been answered
Every dream I've had has come true
Right here in this moment
Is right where I'm meant to be
Here with you, here with me

I could not ask for more than the love you gave me
Cause it's all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more

Kissing her girlfriend on the lips, Alex responded, "Well Benson, I do
pride myself on my good taste, and not just in music," then gave
Olivia's backside a slight squeeze. "And our evening isn't quite over
yet."

Olivia looked at her girlfriend in mock surprise. "You mean there's
more?"

"Yup, but you'll just have to wait until Alex goes to sleep to unwrap
the rest of your presents," said the blonde in a playful voice. "Come
on, let's finish dancing. Then we can head back down to, uh, continue
the festivities. Sound good?"

Pulling Alex closer, Olivia buried her nose into the blonde's neck and
gave her a few kisses in response. "Mmmmm, I can't wait."
