TITLE: BEB: Mother’s Day

RATING: MA

PAIRING: A/O

DISCLAIMER: Not mine.

SUMMARY: What makes a mother? Kennedy is about to find out.

A/N: This is NOT the story I had planned for Mother’s Day, but a bad trip to the doctor followed by being poked and prodded at, well, this is what came out. I had planned a sappy "first Mother's Day" story. Ha!

Kennedy Cabot Benson was hard at work on his Mother’s Day card, when Sophie decided to take a look. "Quit Sophie! No peeking!" The little redhead frowned at her best friend and went back to work on her own card. Pleased with his work, he carefully laid the glitter encrusted card to the side and began putting the finishing touches on his other card.

His friend Bobby wondered over and asked, "How come you’re makin’ another one?"

Kennedy non-chalantly answered, "’Cause I gots two mommies."

Wide eyed, Bobby said, "You do? How come?" Kennedy shrugged. "Where’s your daddy?"

"I don’t have one." Sophie came over and decided to join the conversation.

"I have two mommies too." Bobby scratched his head before going back to his own card.

The next day as Kennedy, Sophie and Bobby were waiting to be picked up from day care, or as Kennedy insisted on calling it, school, Bobby heard his name being called.

"Bobby? Bobby where are you?"

Waving to his brother he shouted, "Over here Charlie!"

"Come on fatso, Mom’s waiting." Bobby turned to say good bye to his friends and saw Sophie scowling.

She marched right up to Charlie Johnson and said, "You shouldn’t call your brother names! It’s not nice."

Towering over the girl, Charlie said, "Aren’t you the ones that don’t have a daddy?" Making air quotes he continued, "You have ‘two mommies?’" Scared, Sophie took a step back as he said this.

Kennedy took her hand and whispered, "It’s ok Sophie. Don’t be scared." Charlie reached down and grabbed the cards Kennedy had made for his mother’s.

Looking at them, he said, "You’re a mama’s boy times two. You know what they call your mothers? Dykes! You do know that only one of them is your real mother, right? Two dykes can’t have a baby."

Kennedy’s lower lip trembled and tears welled up in his eyes.

"You’re mean! Give me back my cards!" Looking at Kennedy, he deliberately tore them up and threw the pieces at him. Kennedy and Sophie hurried to pick up the pieces. Just as he was collecting pieces, he heard his name being called, and ran in the direction of his mother’s voice. Ducking his head, he scurried into the car and buckled himself into his booster seat.

Alex tried to talk to him all the way home, but he wouldn’t say anything. When they got home, he ran right by Clarence without giving him his afternoon treat, and hurried up the steps to his room. He slammed the door shut and crawled under the bed. Alex could hear him crying and called out gently, "Kennedy, honey, come out from under the bed. Mommy can’t reach you." She heard him sniffle and then she heard him making his way out from under the bed.

He crawled up on his bed and she sat next to him. "What’s wrong baby?" He pointed to her swollen belly.

"Was I in your belly?" She nodded.

"Why?"

"Mom-Mo’s not my real mommy?"

Alex tilted his head up. "Who told you that?"

Wiping his nose on his shirt sleeve, he answered, "Bobby’s brother Charlie. He’s really big and mean. He scared Sophie today and he calls Bobby bad names. An’ he ripped up my cards I made for you and Mom-Mo for Mother’s Day." Tears rolled down his cheeks and Alex could feel her heart breaking.

Pulling him into a hug, she whispered, "Would you like to help me make some cookies? And Clarence needs his treat." Pacified, the little boy took off down the steps. Alex found him rubbing Clarence on the belly.

Getting out the tub of ready made cookie dough, she got Kennedy started on scooping out cookie balls and placing them on the cookie sheet. When she was sure he was engrossed in that, she called Olivia.

"Benson."

"It’s me. How soon can you get home?"

Alarmed, Olivia sputtered, "Are you in labor? It’s too soon if you are! How far apart are your contractions?"

"Baby, calm down! I’m not in labor."

"Oh. Then what’s going on?"

Glancing at Kennedy to make sure he was still enthralled with making cookies, she said, "You know that conversation we always knew we’d have to have with him? I think it’s time."

Glancing around the squad room, Olivia responded, "I’m on my way."

She arrived home to find Alex and Kennedy removing a try of cookies from the oven. "Hey sweetie, Co-Counsel." Alex kissed her and Kennedy smiled at her but did not move toward her. She looked to Alex who motioned for her to follow her.

"Kennedy, you can have two cookies and a glass of milk, ok?" He nodded.

She led Olivia into the living room and proceeded to tell her what had happened. Olivia was livid. "How dare he hurt my son! I think we should talk to the day care center and his parents." Alex agreed. "And I think I should talk to Kennedy. Alone. But what am I going to say? How do I explain all of this?"

Alex gave her hand a squeeze. "I think we should explain, in as general a terms as possible, how babies are made." Olivia paled at the thought. Alex kissed her and grinned at the look of horror on her face. "Why don’t you and Kennedy take Clarence for a walk?"

Olivia wondered, not for the first time, why dogs felt the need to pee on every tree they came across. Looking down the sidewalk at the row of Birch trees, she sighed, knowing it would be a while before they made it back home.

"Hey Kennedy?"

"Yeah?"

"Did something happen at school today?"

The little boy froze. Looking up he said, "Bobby’s big brother Charlie scared Sophie."

"Is that all?" Kennedy pointed to a "stick" Clarence had left and Olivia handed him a plastic baggie. "Kennedy?" He lowered his head and shook it.

"Charlie tore up my cards I made for you and Mommy for Mother’s Day."

"And?"

Blue eyes turned to look at Olivia, with big wet tears shining in them. "He said you wasn’t my real mommy. He called you and Mommy a name. It sounds like "bikes." Is that a bad word?"

Olivia knelt beside her son. "Not usually. Remember when we talked about all the ways people say God’s name? How sometimes it’s ok and other times it’s not?" He nodded. "The word he used was "dykes." The way he meant it was to be mean. Is he a mean boy?" Kennedy nodded.

"He called Bobby fatso and Sophie told him that wasn’t nice. That’s when he scared her. I told her not to be afraid, and that’s when he ripped up my cards! And now I don’t have anything to give you or Mommy for Mother’s Day!" Tears rolled down his cheeks and Olivia hugged him.

"It’s ok Kennedy. I’ll take you to get Mommy something tomorrow."

"Why aren’t you my real mommy? He said two girls couldn’t make a baby. Is that true?"

"Kennedy, you know your friend Gracie? How her parents went to China to get her?" He nodded. "They adopted her just like I adopted you. Are they her real parents?" He nodded. "Then I’m your real mother just like Mommy. Ok?"

"Ok. But why did he say that stuff?" She rubbed his head.

"Because he’s a mean boy with problems. I’m going to talk to his parents, ok? What’s his last name?"

"Ok. Johnson. Can we go home now and get more cookies?" She laughed and led her son and his dog back to the loft.

Alex caught her eye as they were entering the apartment and Olivia smiled.

"Can I have some more cookies Mommy? Please?"

"You may have three more cookies and then go get ready for bed." He ran into the kitchen and they could hear him getting cookies. He ran out a few minutes later carrying two cookies, with Clarence on his heels and what looked like cookie crumbs hanging from his whiskers.

They tucked him in and as they were leaving, Olivia tapped Clarence on the nose and said, "No accidents!"

She helped Alex down the steps and they sat on the couch discussing the incident with Kennedy.

"We always knew this would happen Liv. At least we’ve all discussed this and know everybody’s role." Olivia took her hand.

"I never thought it would happen in day care! Kids can be so cruel." Alex caught the wistful tone and wondered if Olivia was thinking about another group of kids from another time. I just want to protect him."

Alex kissed her. "I know baby. I do too, but he’s going to have to face this sooner or later. We’re a different family, but a family none the less. I think you did a good job comparing Gracie’s parents and yourself." She rubbed Olivia’s thigh.

Olivia ran her hands over Alex’s belly. "Do you think it will be easier on her because she’s a girl?"

"I don’t know Olivia. Maybe." Alex pulled Olivia’s head to her. "I love you." She kissed the brunette again and again, sliding off the couch and onto her knees between Olivia’s legs. She began trying to unbutton Olivia’s pants. At Olivia’s look, she smiled. "I want to. Right here, right now."

"Aren’t you uncomfortable?" Alex shook her head as she lowered Olivia’s zipper and tugged on the pants.

Olivia lifted her hips and Alex lowered her pants and panties, easing them over her feet. Leaning in as best she could, she began kissing Olivia again, running her hands up in under her shirt. Tweaking Olivia’s nipples, she grinned at the yelp her wife released.

Touching her center, she found her wife wet. Alex pushed into her with two fingers and took her clit between her lips. Olivia’s head was thrown back and her right hand was wrapped around Alex’s hair. Through hooded eyes, she could make out the rounded form of her lover. Watching Alex love her with her mouth, sent ripples of pleasure through her. She gasped as Alex added a third finger and seconds later she felt her orgasm hit.

Once Olivia had caught her breath, Alex looked up at her and smiled. Raising up, she kissed her wife and whispered, "You’re his mother just as much as I am. You know that. Now, come to bed."

Olivia pulled her underwear on and followed Alex upstairs to their bedroom.

"Can I return the favor Mrs. B?" Alex shook her head.

"Sorry baby. Sex is not on my radar right now." Olivia hugged her.

"You know I find you wildly attractive when you’re pregnant, right?" Alex nodded.

"I just have no desire at this late date." Olivia nodded and led her over to the bed and undressed her. Turning back the covers, she helped Alex get situated and then stripped off and padded into the bathroom to get ready for bed. When she returned, Alex was sound asleep. She watched her for a few minutes, before pulling on some sweats and heading down the stairs.

"This is Fin."

"It’s Olivia. I need your help. Actually, Kennedy needs your help."

After finishing her conversation with Fin, she turned on the computer and surfed the web, looking for tips on how to talk to your preschooler about sex. Finding little of value, she turned the computer off and went back upstairs to bed.

She awoke the next morning to find two sets of blue eyes looking at her.

"Morning sleepy head." She kissed both Alex and Kennedy before pulling both of them into bed with her.

"How are my three favorite people doing today?" She took a moment to examine Alex’s belly. "Sweetie, you look like you’ve dropped." Alex mumbled a response, and Kennedy patted her belly.

"I wish she’d hurry up!" Alex and Olivia laughed at him.

"So do I Kennedy, so do I!"

Olivia was busy cracking eggs and scrambling them when Alex made her way down to the kitchen with Kennedy. Kennedy and Clarence were jumping around in the living room as Alex tried to wrap herself around Olivia from behind.

"I miss nuzzling your neck from behind." She was busy playing with the hair at the nape of Olivia’s neck.

"It won’t be long. I think I have an idea of what to say to Kennedy about how babies are made."

"Oh?" Olivia turned to Alex and rubbed her belly.

"I thought we could do this during breakfast."

"What? You want to tell our son how babies are made over breakfast?"

"Trust me. Kennedy, Clarence, breakfast is ready." She scooped the eggs onto plates and put the leftovers into Clarence’s dog bowl.

As they sat down to eat, Kennedy led them in prayer. "Than you God for this food and my Mommy and Mom-Mo and Clarence and my sister and Sophie." He paused and both Olivia and Alex thought he was done, but he added, "And God bless Bobby for having a brother like Charlie and bless Charlie for being mean." Alex looked at Olivia who shrugged and tried not to laugh.

"Kennedy, would you like to know how babies are made?" Alex nearly choked on her eggs as Olivia got up from the table and went to the refrigerator. She returned with an egg and a glass of water.

Kennedy sat watching his mother with rapt attention. "To make a baby, you need two things; you need an egg." She held up the egg. "And you need a liquid." She held up the glass of water. "The egg comes from the mommy or girl, and the liquid comes from the daddy or boy. The liquid and the egg meet inside the mommy." She took the bowl she’d been using and placed the egg inside it, then poured the water over the egg. "See? That makes the beginning of a baby that grows inside the mommy. Just like your sister is growing inside your Mommy." He nodded very seriously. "Only mommies have eggs and daddies have liquid. It takes one of each to make a baby, so two mommies or two daddies can’t make a baby. Mommy and I had help from Mr. Crawford. You remember you met him when you were two?" Kennedy thought for a minute before finally nodding.

"He got me that really cool truck, right? The one that made the cool noises?" Both Alex and Olivia grimaced at the hideous sounds that came from the fire rescue truck, before nodding.

"So he’s my Daddy?"

"Technically, yes. We borrowed his liquid to help make you, so he’s your biological daddy, but you live with us and he’s just like Uncle’s Elliot and Fin and Munch. Ok?"

"Ok. And he knows he’s my bi’logical daddy?"

Alex answered, "Yes. He helped us create you, and you can talk to him anytime you want to. Ok?" He nodded.

"Can I go watch cartoons now?"

"Yes." Alex sighed as Kennedy and Clarence ran up to his room.

"I think that went well. What do you think Alex?" She walked over to Olivia and sat down in her lap.

"I think you did a wonderful job. Where did you come up with "egg" and "liquid?’"

"It just came to me as I was making breakfast." She pulled Alex and their baby close, and nuzzled her neck. "I love you. And her." She placed her hand on Alex’s belly before leaning in to kiss it.

The doorbell rang and Alex waddled into answer it. "Fin? What are you doing here?"

He kissed her on the cheek. "I need to see Liv. We caught a break on a case and I need to borrow her for a couple of hours." Alex looked between the two and raised an eyebrow.

"Ok. But don’t keep her out to long. She still needs to get my Mother’s Day gift."

"Did you get it?" Fin handed her the slip of paper. Olivia looked at the paper and then at Fin. "Thanks." She moved down the steps, but Fin grabbed her arm.

"I’m going with you." She nodded.

Flashing her badge, she motioned toward Fin and said, "Detectives Benson and Tutuola. May I have a word with you Mrs. Johnson?" The lady motioned them in, and Olivia could hear the voices of two boys coming from another room in the brownstone.

"Mrs. Johnson, do you have a son named Bobby?"

"Yes. Why?" Olivia nodded.

"Are you aware that his older brother, Charlie, bullies him? Calls him names?" She shook her head, slightly confused. "My son Kennedy and your son Bobby attend the same day care. The other day when my wife picked our son up, he was upset. Among other things, Kennedy told his mother that Charlie had called Bobby "fatso.’"

Mrs. Johnson covered her eyes. "This is all my fault. Ever since my husband and I separated, Charlie has had a difficult time. He’s been acting out and moody." Fin watched Olivia to see what she would do.

"Mrs. Johnson, you really need to get both boys some counseling. Most school shooters were bullied and the prisons are full of criminals who were bullies or who had behavioral problems. Charlie terrorized my son by ripping up the cards he had made for my wife and I to celebrate Mother’s Day. He also said some nasty things that led to me having to explain to my four year old son why two "dykes" can’t make a baby." She pinned the woman with a look.

Mrs. Johnson closed her eyes and began rubbing her temples. "Detective Benson, may I have a moment with you please?"

"What do you want to get Mom-Mo for Mother’s Day, Kennedy?" Pointing to the item in the middle, he giggled.

XXXXXXX

Olivia and Fin left the Johnson’s apartment and headed back toward the loft. "You think this helped anything Liv?" She shrugged.

"Who knows. Either way, I’ve done my part, and in eight years when the kid’s 18, I’m sure I’ll see him in booking."

"Remind me never to mess with your family." Olivia cut her eyes at him and nodded. "What’d you get Alex for Mother’s Day?" Olivia smiled.

"I’m not telling, but I am rather proud of my gift."

XXXXXXXXXXX

When she arrived home, she found Alex and Kennedy in the extra bedroom giggling and wrapping what she assumed was her gift.

"What’s going on in here?" Kennedy laughed out loud.

"We’re wrapping your gift! It’s a surprise and I’m not tellin’!" Olivia kissed him first and then his mother.

"Well how about we got get Mommy’s gift?"

XXXXXXXXXX

She handed the sales clerk her credit card and waited for him to return. She felt Kennedy pulling on her sleeves and looked down at the boy. "Can we get that for my sister?" Looking at what he was pointing at, she smiled.

"I think we can swing that. You like that one huh?" He nodded. She motioned to the same sales clerk and pointed to the item. Their next stop was at Macy’s.

After getting Kennedy put to bed, Alex and Olivia retired to their room. "Are you going to tell me what you talked to Mrs. Johnson about?"

"How’d you know I went to see her?" Alex kissed her.

"Because you love Kennedy and you are not above flashing a badge when it suits your purpose. Namely when some one is hurting our son or me. Now tell me what she had to say."

Olivia filled Alex in and then added, "Mr. Johnson left her for someone else."

"Oh." Rubbing Alex’s belly she kissed her.

"For another man. Bobby doesn’t know, but Charlie found out the hard way. He walked in on them in bed."

Alex grimaced. "OH! Poor kid." Olivia just nodded. "Come on Liv, you have to admit that had to be hard on him."

"Yes. And I can wait eight years to exact revenge if need be. I’m sure he’ll make America’s Most Wanted one day." Alex playfully slapped at her.

XXXXXXXXXX

Olivia and Kennedy greeted Alex the next morning with breakfast in bed and a dozen roses. 1o red and two white ones. One for each child.

"Thank you baby." Olivia took great delight in spoiling her wife, by feeding her. Alex allowed the indulgence only on this day, unless she was ill.

They stood by their ritual of waiting until lunch to open their gifts, and this year, instead of Alex trying to cook, they ordered in.

Kennedy was excited for both of his mommies to open their gifts and couldn’t stand still the minute they finished lunch.

"I believe it’s Mom-Mo’s turn to go first. Go get the gifts we got for her Kennedy." He came back slightly off balance with the weight of the packages. Smiling, he gave them to Olivia and went to sit in his Mommy’s lap, as best he could.

Olivia opened the one from Kennedy first and laughed when she saw what he’d bought her. A pair of adult Winnie-the-Pooh house shoes. "I picked those out all by myself Mom-Mo!"

"You did? Thank you! I love them!" She pulled the little boy in for a kiss and a hug. She picked up the other package and opened it, revealing a black and white photograph of Alex and Kennedy wearing white on a black background. Kennedy had his head laying on top of Alex’s stomach and his hand patting the center of her belly. Alex was supporting herself on one arm and had her left hand resting on Kennedy’s head. "My God Alex, that’s beautiful."

Kennedy piped up, "I picked out the frame! Mommy says you can take it to work with you. And when my sister gets here, we all gotta go have our picture made together!"

Olivia felt tears pricking her eyes. "She did huh?" He nodded and Olivia leaned in and kissed Alex long and hard.

Olivia got up to go help Kennedy bring in the gifts they had for Alex. She opened the longest one first, revealing a silk Chinese screen. She cocked her head at Olivia.

"It’s for our bedroom. Since you insist on putting her in the room with us until she’s a year old, I thought it might give us a bit of privacy down the road." Olivia smiled at Alex.

"You know I don’t like the idea of Kennedy being downstairs by himself at his age, and it makes no sense for us to move downstairs when we'll simply be running up and down the steps several times a night." Olivia kissed her again.

"I know sweetie. I have no problems, but as soon as she learns how to pull up in her crib, I don’t want her to see anything that is, how did you say? Traumatic?" Alex laughed. "Now open these other two gifts.

She opened the box from Macy’s and found a pair of adult Looney Tunes pajamas from Kennedy. "For after your belly goes down Mommy!" Alex kissed him and hugged him.

Olivia handed her a much smaller box and watched as Alex opened it, revealing her Mother’s ring, with a new stone. "I thought I had misplaced this after my hands became to swollen to wear it! I was frantic!"

Olivia smiled warmly at her. "I saw my chance and took it. They had to special order the emerald, and then there was a problem with the setting, but it’s all taken care of. As long as she’s born in the month of May."

"I don’t think that will be a problem."

They went for ice cream and a short walk around the neighborhood with Clarence, who’d gotten Olivia a new leash for Mother’s Day. Alex had assured Olivia she was his human mother because she cleaned up all of his accidents.

As they tucked Kennedy into bed that night, he hugged them both and then stretched out with his hands behind his head. Alex couldn’t help but laugh at her son.

"What are you doing?"

"Jus’ thinkin.’"

"About what?"

"How I’m glad I gots two mommies. And a dog." Olivia kissed him and hugged him.

XXXXXXXXXX

"Five years ago Alex, I never thought any of this would be possible."

"I did. I always had faith in you Liv. Even when you didn’t have faith in yourself."

"For years, Mother’s Day was horrible Alex. I thought about my child and then my Mother. It just hurt. But now I have you and Kennedy and this one." She placed her hand on Alex’s belly and kissed her wife. Alex deepened the kiss. Olivia pulled back and rested her forehead on Alex’s.

"Don’t stop."

"I thought sex wasn’t on your radar right now?"

"I changed my mind."

They made love slowly and afterwards, they lay spooned together. A couple of hours later, Olivia was awakened by Alex.

"Again?" She mumbled sleepily.

"Baby, wake up." Olivia ran her hand down Alex’s front and to her center where she found wetness.

"God you’re wet." Alex nudged her.

"Liv, baby, that’s not desire. My water just broke."

Olivia sat upright and turned on the lamp. Looking horrified, she pulled the covers back and found the area around Alex drenched.

"Happy Mother’s Day, baby."

A/N: This last bit is an homage to my Mother. Poor thing went into labor with me on Mother's Day and TWO DAYS later I came out. After that, I am her only child.
